For the third consecutive year, the Carroll County Board of Education has tentatively approved a full millage rate rollback for county property owners.
The county tax digest increased by over $148 million, allowing the BOE to reduce the school tax millage rate from 16.077 mills to 15.809 mills. This marks the fifth consecutive annual millage rate cut from the school board, bringing the millage rate down from nearly 18 mills in 2021.
When compared with the five similar surrounding districts, Carroll County’s property tax levy per learner is the lowest of the six districts, indicating that the district efficiently uses funds across its 23 school campuses.
On a spending-per-learner basis, Carroll County Schools spends less than 82 percent of Georgia districts despite having more than twice as many schools as the average district.
In May the district received a four-star rating for financial efficiency from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement. Of Georgia’s 180 school districts, only 15 districts scored higher. Systems with high College and Career Readiness Performance Index scores and low spending per student earn the highest scores.
The BOE approved a FY2027 general fund budget of almost $213.5 million on June 19 that includes step raises for both certified teachers and classified staff, replacement buses for the county fleet, technology improvements and a continued investment in school safety and security.
The board is expected to vote to officially set the millage rate at a called meeting prior to the next scheduled monthly work session.
