Residents in Coweta County will have an opportunity to safely dispose of unused medications during an upcoming Drug Take Back event on Saturday, October 24.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at two locations in Newnan: the Coweta County Sheriff’s Office Precinct 1 at 55 Literary Laneand the Newnan Police Department at 1 Joseph-Hannah Blvd. The event is free and anonymous, and participants do not even need to leave their vehicles to drop off unwanted medications.
Residents can bring prescription and over-the-counter medications in pill form, prescription patches, and pet medications in pill form. Medications should be placed in a container such as a pill bottle, box, blister pack, or zipped plastic bag. Vape pens and e-cigarettes will also be accepted, but batteries must be removed before drop-off.
There are some restrictions at the collection sites. Needles, sharps waste, metal containers, and pressurized items will not be accepted. The Newnan Police Department location also cannot accept liquids, syringes, or aerosols such as inhalers.
Participants do not need to provide contact information, and removing personal information from prescription labels is encouraged but not required. After collection, the medications are handled by law enforcement, weighed, and incinerated.
For residents who cannot attend the October 24 event, permanent medication drop-off options are also available. A 24/7 drop box is located outside the Coweta County Jail, and Walmart Pharmacy on Highway 34 has a drop box available from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Some CVS pharmacies also accept unwanted medications.
