Who is really a man’s best friend, his wife or a dog? Carroll County Community Theatre’s presentation of Sylvia, September 20-22, at the Carrollton Center for the Arts, might have the answer.

“If you have ever owned a dog, maybe one from the pound or a stray from your neighborhood, you will relate to this play,” said Tim Chapman, Carrollton arts superintendent. “Also, we are thrilled to have Shelly Elman, University of West Georgia theatre chair, as our director for this production.”

A.R. Gurney’s Broadway hit comedy tells the story of Greg and Kate, who move to Manhattan after 22 years of child-raising in the suburbs. Greg’s career as a financial trader is winding down, while Kate’s career as a public school teacher offers more opportunities. Their marriage is put in serious jeopardy by a dog named Sylvia Greg found in a park. For Greg, the dog is an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. For Kate, the dog becomes a rival for her husband’s affection. Mary Dixon heads up the cast in the play’s title role. This show contains adult language, viewer discretion is advised.

Tickets for Sylvia are $10. Season ticket holders should attend on opening night.

The show is sponsored by Lakeview Animal Hospital.
