Carrollton Center for the Arts’ Gallery Play Saturday: Flying Bird Sculpture workshop on Jan. 11 explores artist Ted Whisenhunt’s kinetic art and invites young people to make a moving sculpture of their own.
“The Gallery Play workshop is a mix of colorful art and some basic engineering ideas,” said Visual Arts Coordinator Marcella Kuykendall. “Students have to design and decorate their pieces with weight and balance in mind in order to make the bird sculptures work properly. They get to work through the same process as our exhibit’s artist had to when making the bird sculpture that inspired the workshop.”
Cultivated, featuring Whisenhunt’s work celebrating of the ingenuity, industriousness, folklore and old-time music of rural Appalachia, is on display through February 13 at the center. Viewers of the exhibit are invited to pull chains or turn cranks on moving sculptures.
Saturday’s workshop will be conducted from 11:00 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. for participants ages 8 – 12 and 1:00 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. for ages 13 and older. The registration fee is $15. Call 770-838-1083 or visit https://carrolltonarts.com/ to register or for more information.
