Central High School senior Cassandra Mercier has signed her letter of intent to ride with the University of Georgia Equestrian Team. As a member of the Equestrian Team, Cassandra will be one of the Western riders. Western riding emphasizes direct rein cures to guide the horse.
Western riding is considered a style of horse riding which has evolved from the ranching and welfare traditions which were brought to the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors, as well as both equipment and riding style, which evolved to meet the working needs of the cowboy in the American West.
Cassandra is the first student in the history of Central High School athletics to earn a scholarship for equestrian riding. She was supported today by her family and close friends.
