Keep Carroll Beautiful to Host Free Household Hazardous Waste and Paper Shredding Event May 16

Residents will have an opportunity to safely dispose of difficult-to-recycle materials during a free two-in-one recycling event hosted by Keep Carroll Beautiful on Saturday, May 16. The event will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Midway Church, located at 1 Midway Church Drive in Villa Rica.

The event will focus on collecting household hazardous waste items and providing secure paper shredding services for local households. Organizers said the event is designed to help residents properly dispose of items that are not easily recycled through traditional local programs.

Household hazardous waste items accepted during the event include paint and paint-related chemicals, household pesticides and insecticides, solvent-based products, automobile fluids, mercury-containing items, and other similar materials. A complete list of accepted items is available at Keep Carroll Beautiful’s website.

Paper shredding services will be provided by Access and are available to households at no cost for up to three bankers boxes of documents. Additional boxes can be shredded for a fee of $3 per box.

Organizers are also asking participants to follow specific guidelines to help the event run smoothly. Households may bring up to five gallons of paint at no charge, with a $2.50 per gallon fee for additional amounts. Up to 20 fluorescent bulbs will be accepted for free, with a $1 fee per bulb for additional quantities. Only straight and U-bend fluorescent bulbs will be accepted.

Participants bringing batteries are encouraged to sort them into categories including alkaline, lithium, NiCad, and other battery types to help speed up the drop-off process.

Some items will not be accepted during the event, including CFL or curly light bulbs, cordless tool batteries, and grill gas cans. Organizers noted that many of these items can still be recycled year-round through retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe’s or through local metal recycling programs.

Additional information and a complete list of accepted materials can be found at www.keepcarrollbeautiful.org.
