Shaw Orange received the inaugural Randy Trask Student of the Year Award at the 2026 GED Annual Conference in Atlanta.
Shaw Orange, a 2025 West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) GED graduate, received the inaugural Randy Trask Student of the Year Award at the 2026 GED Annual Conference. The conference took place in Atlanta from July 29-31.
Orange was nominated by Rebecca Wheeler, Dean of Adult Education at WGTC, and Jessica Simmerson, Career Plus High School Diploma Coordinator at WGTC. The award, named in honor of former CEO of GEDTesting Service Randy Trask, recognizes GED graduates who showcase a strong commitment to earning their credential.
“This award is about advocacy, community and upholding standards that are similar to Randy Trask,” Orange said. “He had a strong belief in building up people, so it’s not only an honor for me to receive this award, but it is also an honor because I get to carry on the Trask legacy.”
As the recipient, Orange received an all-expenses-paid trip and a two-night stay at the Atlanta Marriott Marquis, a new laptop, a $100 gift card, and a $1,000 scholarship from GED Testing Service to the postsecondary institution or program of his choice. He chose to remain at WGTC to pursue his associate degree in healthcare management.
While working toward his GED at WGTC last year, Orange simultaneously completed the Nurse Aide Accelerated Certificate program, showcasing his commitment to building a better future. His dedication paid off as he proudly participated in WGTC’s GED graduation ceremony on May 7, followed by the college’s commencement ceremony on May 8. This scholarship award recognizes the hard work and determination he demonstrated throughout his educational journey.
“Shaw Orange is an incredibly talented and inspiring individual who understands the value of education as a catalyst for change,” Wheeler said. “His commitment to both adult and technical education reflects his vision for a better future, not just for himself, but for those around him. We could not imagine a more deserving recipient of the inaugural Randy Trask Student of the Year Award.”
During the conference, Orange delivered an acceptance speech thanking those who have supported him throughout his journey and sharing his desire to help others.
“When it came to giving my speech, the number one thing I focused on was gratitude,” Orange said. “I have been blessed to have such a loving community here at West Georgia Tech. I’m so thankful for my husband, who has been by my side. I love that I can now use my platform to give hope to students like myself who are trying to earn their GED.”
