The Carrollton High School Speech and Debate Team competed in Taiwan over fall break, earning prestigious recognition in the international tournament hosted by the Taipei American School. The Trojans proudly brought home accolades and new cultural experiences from across the globe.

CHS junior Christian Long was named Top Speaker, followed by CHS students Nelson Quinonez, Brady Pace, Eliana Neill, and Aaron Ashlock. The team of Presley McLaren, Aaron Ashlock, and Brady Pace were tournament finalists, and their fellow debaters Nelson Quinonez and Mae Brodsky were named semifinalists. Senior Blythe Browning placed third in the Original Oratory category, and Christian Long, West Yancey, Kevin Stuart, Samantha Berg, Eliana Neill, and Brantley Walker completed the tournament as quarterfinalists.

Longtime leader of the CHS Speech and Debate program, Coach Richard Bracknell, shared, “Every one of these students has worked hard to reach this level of competition, and seeing them perform so successfully on the international stage is a tremendous source of pride. This was truly a tournament to remember.”

From touring museums and landmarks to attending traditional tea demonstrations and exploring the countryside, students embraced the vast landscape of Taiwanese culture. During their trip, the people of Taiwan celebrated their national day of independence, which was filled with festivals and food that highlighted the culture. The Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation supported this experiential learning opportunity, investing in students’ futures by expanding their horizons and strengthening their skills.

We are proud of these debaters and grateful to their supporters and the Education Foundation for helping make this opportunity possible.”
