Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad

Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad brings the story of an American freedom crusader to life at the Carrollton Center for the Arts, February 18.

“This historical story has been captured in films, TV series, books and now you can see the story unveiled live on stage,” said Carrollton Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman. “This hero led many enslaved people to freedom before the Civil War, even with a large bounty on her head. She was an inspiration to all people.”

Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist and political activist who was born into slavery, from which she escaped. She subsequently led 13 missions to rescue approximately 70 enslaved people using the network of antislavery activists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. In her later years, Tubman was active in the women’s suffrage movement.

In the play based on the book and lyrics by Douglas Jones and music by Ron Barnett, Tubman and her friend Sarah Bradford narrate Tubman’s adventurous life. This musical history lesson is at times inspiring, heartwarming and even comical.
