Coweta County Schools will begin the 2015-16 school year on Friday, August 7.
Parents and students will be able to visit schools on Thursday, August 6, before the start of the new school year. School Orientation will be held separately for Coweta’s middle, elementary and high schools on August 6:
Middle Schools: 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. (all middle schools)
Elementary Schools: 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. (all elementary schools).
High Schools: 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (all high schools)
Teachers will not be available for formal conferences during Orientation. Orientation provides parents and students an opportunity to find their classrooms and meet their teachers before the start of school
While many schools will hold additional back-to-school functions (check school websites for more information at www.cowetaschools.net), all schools will hold student Orientation at these times on Thursday.
Representatives from the school system’s transportation department will be available at all schools on August 6 and on the first day of school on August 7, to provide information about bus schedules. School bus routes for the new year will also be posted on the school system’s website before the start of school.
Parents who wish to enroll their elementary-age children in the school system’s tuition-based After School Program will be able to do so on August 5 and 6 at their child’s schools. Representatives will be available between the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at each elementary school.
Parents who need to register their children for school can do so before the start of the new school year at the school system’s Central Registration Center, located at 167 Werz Industrial Drive in Newnan.
Coweta Schools registration Center offers web-based pre-registration through the school system’s website (www.cowetaschools.net). Online pre-registration establishes basic information for enrolling new students, and will explain necessary documents.
Parents should complete online pre-registration on the website before coming to the center, or can use computer terminals offered at the registration office.
The Registration Center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday (parking is located at the rear of the school system’s Werz Drive central office). Parents can call the center at 770-254-5551 for more information.
Georgia law requires that students must be four years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Pre-Kindergarten classes, and five years old by September 1 in order to enroll in Kindergarten.
Students enrolled in a Coweta County School System pre-Kindergarten class during the previous school year do not need to register again to enter Kindergarten. Children who will by five years old before September 1 and who have not been registered for school before, however, must do so to begin kindergarten classes when the new school year starts on August 7.
Students must attend the school for which their home is districted. To find out what elementary school district serves an address, call the Coweta County School System Transportation Department at 770-254-2820.
To enroll a new student in school, parents will need to provide the following items:
1. Birth Certificate – A state-issued, certified copy is required (hospital certificates are not accepted).
2. Social Security Card
3. Proof of Residence – two items from the following list are required for address verification:
a. Mortgage documents or a security deed which indicates the location of the residence;
b. Apartment or home lease or rent receipt indicating the current address;
c. Current electrical bill or application for electrical service showing the current address (please bring the entire bill, to show electrical service and address);
d. Property tax records which indicate the location of the residence;
e. Voter precinct identification card or other voter documentation indicating the current address.
4. State ID or Drivers License – Must be current (not expired). Students may only be registered by a biological parent or legal guardian. Proof of custody or guardianship is required if the registering adult is not the birth parent.
5. Immunization Certificate – Georgia Department of Human Resources (DHR) immunization certificate form 3231 or a signed 30-day waiver.
6. Hearing-Dental-Vision Certificate on Georgia Form 3300 or a signed 120-day waiver.
NOTE: Exceptions will be made for above requests where appropriate. No document will be required that would cause or result in discrimination based on race, color, national origin, or immigration status.
Immunization and Hearing-Dental-Vision certificates can be obtained from the Coweta County Health Department (770-254-7400), or from a family physician.
Students transferring from another Georgia school should already have the certificates available from their previous school. Short-term waivers may be requested during registration to allow parents time to obtain the certificates, but students may be withdrawn if the certificates are not filed by the end of the waiver period.
Since punctual and regular school attendance at all grade levels is important to a child’s educational success, all parents are urged to make sure that their child begins class at the start of the new school year on August 7.
Coweta County high schools operate on a block schedule system, which allows students to complete a full course earning one Carnegie Unit in one semester. Therefore, missed classes at any point during the semester will result in significant lapses in instructional time, which can seriously jeopardize a student’s success.
