Southwire To Host Disaster Relief Collection For Victims of Hurricane Harvey

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey, which is causing record levels of catastrophic flooding and damage in Houston, Texas and the surrounding areas, Southwire’s Project GIFT will host a disaster relief collection, beginning on Wednesday, August 30. The event will last until 2 p.m. on Friday, September 1.

The collection will be held in the parking lot of the Walmart Supercenter in Carrollton, Ga., from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday and from 7 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Friday.

Hurricane Harvey made landfall early Saturday morning as a Category 4 storm, damaging homes, businesses and other establishments before stalling over Houston, where rain and flooding continue and are projected to last throughout the week. It is estimated that at least 450,000 people will request assistance from the damage.

“We have employees, family, neighbors and friends in the Houston area. Thankfully, all of our employees are safe at this time, but we stand ready to help in the days to come,” said Kristian C. Whittington, Southwire’s manager of employee engagement and communications and Project GIFT coordinator. “Project GIFT began as an outlet to serve those suffering in the wake of disaster, and we continue to focus our efforts in that same spirit of giving back.”

Items accepted through the collection include bottled water, paper goods, cleaning supplies, nonperishable food, baby items, pet supplies, personal hygiene products, ice chests and more. Clothing will not be accepted.
“Our community continues to show its unity and strength during times of natural disaster,” said Whittington. “We challenge each and every one of our neighbors to step up and help us collect as many supplies as possible.”
