Construction on a new initiative has begun for Bremen City Schools. A new athletic complex is coming to the corner of Highway 78 and Mangham Drive on the east side of town. According to Superintendent David Hicks, “It’s a pay as we go endeavor, and we allocated $700,000 out of the school system’s operational FY18 budget. If all goes well, we hope to have it complete within three years.” First to be constructed will be a baseball field and multipurpose field for sports like soccer and lacrosse, which are anticipated to be completed by spring 2018. Longer-term plans include tennis courts, a half-mile walking track which cross-country will use, finished parking, and possibly a children’s playground. As the project is completed, the school system hopes to add a multipurpose building for concessions, restrooms, and locker rooms. However, all of the latter items will have to wait until more funding is obtained. Dr. Hicks added, “We will be kicking off some fundraising initiatives soon, and we’ve applied for quite a few grants but haven’t heard back on those yet.”
