Press Release: Flood Warning for Sweetwater Creek in Eastern Douglas County

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City has issued a Flood Warning for Sweetwater Creek in Lithia Springs and Austell, affecting Cobb and Douglas counties. Recent heavy rainfall has caused significant runoff into streams and rivers, which will cause flooding in some areas. The warning is from 12 p.m. Tuesday through Wednesday night.

At 3 a.m. Tuesday, the stage was 6.3 feet and rising. Minor flooding is forecast in areas that regularly flood during heavy rain events, including Woodrow Wilson Park, the lower area of Mt. Vernon Road, Wren Circle Park, and the paintball fields on Blairs Bridge Road adjacent to Interstate 20. No residential structures should be affected by the floodwaters.

Flood stage is 10 feet, and the forecast is for Sweetwater Creek to rise near 12.3 feet.

Douglas County Emergency Management, Sheriff’s Department, and Fire/EMS are monitoring the floodprone areas, and will block off entering roadways when appropriate.

Woodrow Wilson Park and Wren Circle Park are designed to be flooded. There are no permanent structures within these parks that will be negatively affected by this flood event.
