Bremen High School wrestlers finished just short of a state title in this past weekend’s Class AAA competition at the GHSA State Dual Wrestling Championships. The Blue Devils lost to North Hall 42-22 in the finals at the Macon Centreplex on Saturday.

Head Coach Tony Armas said his team was outmatched by a more talented North Hall squad.

“I was hoping we could win it, but North Hall had a lot of talent, and they were just better than we are right now,” said Armas.

Bremen took down Crisp County in the first round of competition by a score of 55-10. The Blue Devils won a close 34-29 matchup against Jackson County to move on to the championship round.

Armas said some of his younger competitors had not faced a team like North Hall, and he hopes the experience will help them in the traditional state competition next month.

“We have a lot of guys who had never been in the lineup,” said Armas. “We didn’t get a lot of pins or majors in the final, but they did well. We just have to figure out how to keep piling up points in the dual format.”

The Blue Devils look to repeat as state champs in the traditional format after having captured the 2017 Class AAA title.

“We’re just trying to get better everyday, and have a successful February,” said Armas. “The duals gave us an idea of what we need to do, and who the good people are in the state. We can look at the weigh-in sheet and see where some guys are going to compete.”
