An exhibit and workshop will bring the unique work of Savannah-based puppetry artist, Angela Beasley, to the Carrollton Center for the Arts, beginning May 30.
The Art of Puppet People from the Studio of Angela Beasley showcases Beasley’s career since founding her studio in Savannah in the early 1970s. The exhibit will feature shadow, marionette, hand and rod puppets, puppets of cultural icons and characters from Beasley’s original plays and stories. Puppets range from the size of an average hand to 12 feet tall. She specializes in the process of soft sculpture: shaping and carving polyfoam, the soft material inside a couch cushion.
“Angela Beasley’s brilliant puppet creations are the core of this exhibit,” said Carrollton Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman. “But her work goes beyond building puppets. It also requires a mastery of costuming, theatrical design, engineering, painting and performance to create the worlds of imagination she explores in her shows.”
Audiences across the United States and abroad have enjoyed Beasley’s self-described glitz-n-grits styled cabaret shows. The exhibit’s opening reception on May 30 will include a Puppet People performance.
Gallery Play Friday: Colorful Puppets for Kids, a one-day workshop at the Center for the Arts on May 31, will allow children seven and older to check out the exhibit and create their own puppet. Younger children can participate with a parent’s assistance. The workshop starts at 10am and costs $10 per participating child. All necessary materials and snacks will be provided.
