The Carroll County Community Theatre’s performance of The Lion in Winter brings a Christmas family feud fit for a king to the Carrollton Center for the Arts, December 6-8.

“I love seeing period theatre on stage,” said Arts Superintendent Tim Chapman. “The Lion in Winter features gorgeous costumes, elaborate sets and an exceptional cast.”

The play, written by James Goldman, is a dark comedy about a dysfunctional royal family spending Christmas, 1183, together in a castle in France. As King Henry II of England (Joshua Waits) considers who will succeed him, a royal row erupts among his family and court. The show’s cast features: Cindi Winstead, as Henry’s wife, Eleanor of Aquataine; Ben Jenkins, Connor Fisher and Brad Callahan, as his sons, Richard the Lionheart, Geoffrey the Duke of Brittany and Prince John; Erin Poulson, as Henry’s mistress, Alais; Houston McPherson, as her brother, Philip the King of France; Terry Shadrix, as the King’s loyal guard, William, and Rachel Talley as the Queen’s lady in waiting.

“This is the original Game of Thrones,” said the play’s director, Dana Rampy. “Our local talent never ceases to amaze me. Broadway could not do better.”

The Lion in Winter was made into an Oscar-winning film, starring Peter O’Toole and Katherine Hepburn and a made-for-television movie, starring Patrick Stewart and Glenn Close.

The show is sponsored by Pioneer Ford.
