With temperatures dropping, Carnegie Children’s Librarian, Teri Anderson, noticed many of the homeless in the area without proper protection from the cold. Ms. Anderson knew just the group to help with this problem – the Carnegie Crochet club. A warm hat is always comforting, but a handmade hat is even better. The Carnegie Crochet club, led by Judy Davenport, has met for over seven years. Many participants learned how to crochet during weekly meetings. Now with over twenty regular members and more joining all the time, they quickly took on the task of crocheting a variety of hats. Within weeks, they had over 100 hats to donate to the local organization, Bridging the Gap. “Outreach and helping our community are important goals of the Carnegie. This is what a community is all about, seeing a problem and working together to help solve it,” explains Carnegie Adult Programmer, Brittany Partington.
Bridging the Gap is a nonprofit organization based in Coweta County, Georgia. They provide food, clothing, and ministry to people who are struggling in our community. The mission of Bridging the Gap is to provide assistance to hungry, homeless, and hurting people. Bridging the Gap achieves its mission in three ways: lead with food, serve with compassion, restore through Christ.
The Carnegie Crochet club meets upstairs at the Newnan Carnegie Library every Monday from 1:30 – 4:00 p.m. Instructor, Judy Davenport, teaches the basics and will guide through any trouble spots.
