The University of West Georgia highlighted the future of communications during the School of Communication, Film and Media’s (SCFM) 43rd annual Media Day. This milestone event brought together students, faculty and professionals, showcasing the strength of UWG’s communication programs and the dedication to transformative student experiences.
This year’s Media Day, presented by premier sponsor Georgia Power, underscored the impact of corporate partnerships in advancing educational opportunities. Their support reflects the power of collaboration between academia and industry.
“Georgia Power’s generous gift will support a wide range of initiatives within SCFM, including bluestone, UWG’s Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter, the broader public relations program, Media Day, and the school as a whole,” said Dr. Brad Yates, SCFM dean. “These funds will provide students with invaluable hands-on learning opportunities.”

The funding will also help cover expenses for students attending professional events, such as the Public Relations Society of America Georgia annual conference and the Southern States Communication Association annual conference. Additionally, the gift will support career training, workshops, shadow days and field trips, enabling students to network with communications professionals.
The long-standing partnership between Georgia Power and UWG is the result of efforts from several individuals, including Jacob Hawkins ’06, Georgia Power’s director of public relations and a proud UWG alumnus.
“It’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly 20 years since I earned my degree from UWG,” said Hawkins. “While the campus may look different today, the commitment of the faculty to students and their success, driven by close connections and relationships, remains the same – and I can feel it when I’m here. I’m so very grateful for my experience at UWG, and for the opportunity for Georgia Power to support the school as it continues to grow and evolve with the changing media and professional landscape.”
Through this collaboration between UWG and Georgia Power, SCFM students will gain more opportunities for hands-on experience, networking with industry leaders and developing the skills necessary for success in the fast-paced world of communication.

“Jacob has been actively involved with our public relations program for many years since his graduation, building strong relationships with Dr. Hazel Cole, program head; Professor Taylor Bryant, bluestone faculty advisor; and Professor Kelly Williams, PRSSA faculty advisor. He served as the professional advisor for PRSSA for several years and has consistently returned for Media Day and Media Night,” Yates said. “Over time, he has been a guest lecturer in multiple classes, a featured speaker at PRSSA events and has continually hosted UWG students on-site at Georgia Power.”
