ictoria Duncan, a rising senior at Carrollton High School, recently earned second place for her playwriting skills in the national NAACP ACT-SO (Afro-Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics). The competition took place in Charlotte, NC, during the 116th Annual NAACP Convention.
As an active member of Carrollton High School’s Performing Arts program, Victoria is no stranger to the theater. From singing solos in the spring showcase to taking on a variety of roles in productions, she is not afraid to share her talents under the spotlight.
This time, Victoria chose to demonstrate her passion for the arts by writing an original one-act play, “Flawless Illusions”, which is a psychological horror about two African-American women in the 1970s working at a haunted department store.
She won the county-level playwriting competition through the local NAACP branch to represent Carroll County and earn the opportunity to enter the national contest. In Charlotte, Victoria competed against students from all over the country, including other Georgia branches.
The national judges encouraged the young playwright, sharing feedback that the drama was “outstanding on every level.” The contest included an interview portion on July 11, and Victoria officially won the silver medal on July 13.
“Trying something new helped me realize that it’s okay to explore different talents to find your niche,” said Victoria. “The experience has truly inspired me to keep writing, and it’s given me more confidence in my ideas and goals.”
