Local Opportunities to Take Part in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census

Area residents will have two opportunities this week to learn more about pollinators and take part in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census.

On Friday, August 21, the Carroll County Pollinator Census Live Event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Carroll County Ag Center, 900 Newnan Road, at the Buffalo Creek Garden.

The family-friendly event will include a live reading of The Great Pollinator Count by Susan Edwards Richmond, pollinator crafts, sensory bins, a pollinator passport activity and a visit from the West Georgia Regional Library System Bookmobile. Visitors can also sample local honey varieties and take part in a hands-on station to plant pollinator seeds.

The event is being held in conjunction with the Great Southeast Pollinator Census, taking place August 21 and 22.

Another opportunity to participate will be held Saturday, August 22, at 6 p.m. at McIntosh Reserve. Friends of McIntosh Reserve will host a family-friendly Pollinator Census Walk & Talk at the Pollinator Garden near the lower bathhouse.

Participants will begin with an introduction to counting pollinators before spreading out for 15-minute counting sessions. Materials and counting guides will be provided, and participants are welcome to complete as many sessions as they like. Visitors may also bring a camp chair.

The McIntosh Reserve event is free with park admission.

Both events offer a fun way for families and community members to learn more about the bees, butterflies and other pollinators that play an important role in our local environment while contributing to the Great Southeast Pollinator Census.
