Central’s Will McJury recently signed to play soccer at Truett McConnell University. The Central High School senior plans to pursue a degree in nursing and will begin classes in the fall. Will’s mother, Mrs. Donna McJury, and his sister, Ms. Reilly McJury, joined Will and his coaches for the signing ceremony at Central High School. Central’s Head Boys Soccer Coach is Mr. Mike Townson.
McJury played in the first ever GACA State All Star game, and was a highly talented player for the Lions soccer team.
“I’ve been a head coach for 17 years now—and a lot of coaches say this—but Will is one of the best kids I’ve ever coached,” said Townson. “When I took over as head coach at Central, Will and I butted heads a lot, but it really brought us closer and helped us both to give the team 100 percent.”
Townson praised McJury’s work outside the classroom, noting that he has done extensive work with Tanner Medical Center’s nursing program while in high school.
“What he does off the field, with the nursing program at Tanner, is phenomenal,” said Townson. “He’s a great young man and he’s really going to be successful in college.”
Townson went on to point out that McJury had the talent to play at the highest level of collegiate soccer but instead chose to go to a smaller school, Truett McConnell, where he will receive a full-ride athletic scholarship.
“He had the opportunity to go play Division I soccer, but he went up to Truett McConnell and really fell in love with the small school and what they have up there,” said Townson. “He was a tremendous leader for us and he’s really going to be a good one for them.”
