Villa Rica Celebrates 31st Anniversary of Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace and Gospel Heritage Festival

The city of Villa Rica is set to host a powerful weekend of music, culture, and community as the 31st Annual Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace and Gospel Heritage Festival takes place June 27–29, 2025. This three-day event honors the legacy of Thomas A. Dorsey, known as the “Father of Gospel Music,” and brings together jazz, gospel, and blues fans from across the region.

The celebration begins on Friday, June 27 at 7:00 p.m. with a dazzling Anniversary Gala at Villa Rica High School. Guests are invited to dress in black, white, and red attire for an elegant evening featuring a live performance by The Mose Davis Trio featuring Leonard Julien. Tickets for the gala are $40 and can be purchased via QR code or online through Eventbrite.

On Saturday, June 28, the festival shifts into full gear with a day filled with soul-stirring gospel and classic blues:

  • 3:00 p.m. – Saturday Afternoon Gospel at Mt. Prospect Baptist Church (133 Thomas Dorsey Drive) with performances by Paul Porter & The Christianaires, the Thomas A. Dorsey Birthplace Choir, and Dr. Eddie Robinson.
  • 6:30 p.m. – Saturday Night Blues at the Mill Amphitheater in Downtown Villa Rica, headlined by The Ray Howard Band, known for their tribute to Earth, Wind & Fire.

On Sunday, June 29, the festivities conclude with a special Sunday Afternoon Gospel Celebration at Mt. Prospect Baptist Church, beginning at 4:00 p.m. The concert will feature:

  • The Columbus-Albany Mass Choir Union
  • Reginald Jefferson & The Royal Priesthood Chorale

In addition to the performances, visitors can enjoy a variety of food and merchandise vendors on Saturday, along with fireworks following the evening concert. Admission is free to all events except for the Friday Gala.

The Thomas A. Dorsey Festival is not only a tribute to a gospel music legend, but also a joyful gathering that uplifts the arts, strengthens community ties, and keeps the rich heritage of gospel and blues music alive.
