UWG Powers Record $723M Economic Impact Across Region

The University of West Georgia continues to be a driving force in Georgia’s economy, contributing more than $723 million to the local, regional and state economy in fiscal year 2025, according to a recent study released by the University System of Georgia.

This marks a new record for UWG and represents a 10.5% increase over the previous year’s $654 million economic impact

The study measured institution-related spending from July 1, 2024, through June 30, 2025, and includes direct, indirect and induced economic activity generated through university operations, student spending and related employment.

“UWG’s growing economic impact reflects the vital role we play as an educational institution, employer and community partner,” said Dr. Michael Johnson, UWG’s president. “When students choose UWG, the benefits extend far beyond our campus. Their presence supports local businesses, strengthens the regional workforce and creates economic activity that ripples throughout west Georgia. Every dollar invested in higher education generates returns for our communities, and this report demonstrates the power of a strong university to drive opportunity and prosperity across the region.”

The report highlights several key indicators of UWG’s impact:

  • $348.8 million in student spending, reflecting the significant contributions students make to local businesses and communities;
  • 1,441 on-campus jobs and 3,427 off-campus jobs supported by institution-related spending, underscoring UWG’s role as a major employment engine throughout the region; and
  • $1.42 million in expected lifetime earnings for each bachelor’s degree recipient from UWG, demonstrating the long-term value of earning a college degree.

The findings reinforce UWG’s role in strengthening the economic vitality of west Georgia. Through its academic programs, workforce development efforts, campus operations and student engagement, the university generates economic activity that supports businesses, creates jobs and contributes to long-term regional growth.

These figures are part of a broader statewide impact, with Georgia’s public colleges and universities collectively contributing $25.1 billion to the state’s economy in fiscal year 2025, an increase of 8.9% over the previous year. USG also supported 170,096 jobs statewide.

“A USG degree isn’t just a diploma. It’s a game-changer for our students and a major win for Georgia’s economy,” USG Chancellor Sonny Perdue said. “Adding $25 billion to the state and giving our graduates a $1.4 million lifetime boost shows the real power of public higher education. When our students succeed, they put strong skills, a great work ethic and real value right back into Georgia communities.”
