Sometimes it takes getting lost to find one’s true character. In The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, UWG Theatre Company’s first production of their “Home is Where the Heart Is” season, Christopher, a 15-year-old boy, learns about the world as he gets lost in the big city. In Simon Stephens’ stunning and beautiful adaptation of the popular young adult novel by Mark Haddon, the audience is transported with Christopher as he meets the bustle and overstimulation of the city as he takes on the task of investigating the death of his neighbor’s dog.
Focusing on themes of love, communication, and connection, audiences have lauded the play as “deeply inspiring and touching.” Described as “A brilliant mashup of Billy Elliott and A Beautiful Mind” (Deadline), the play focuses on how we, through the character of Christopher, maneuver ourselves through social customs, even as they continually change with technology.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is certainly a whodunnit, but it goes farther than that by exploring how we as human beings connect, especially when the seeming barriers of communication, neurodivergence, and misunderstanding are explored and overcome.
Using technology to show how Christopher’s neurodivergent mind might understand a simple subway ride, while also incorporating clear and beautiful storytelling, UWG Theatre Company’s production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time will be entertainment for the entire family.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time will be held in the Townsend Center Mainstage Theater September 30-October 3 at 7:30PM and Sunday, October 4 at 2:30PM. There will be a Community Preview on September 29 at 7:30PM. Tickets are $15 for the general public, $10 for seniors, and $5 for students with school ID.
