eorgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) contractors have extended the bridge rehabilitation activities on Post Road Bridge over I-20 in Douglas County through mid- August.

The bridge maintenance work requires the closure of the bridge to through traffic and those closures were put in place on June 17.  The tentative completion date for the project was July 31; however, additional utility work is needed.  Once the remaining utility work is completed, the contractor estimates that the bridge rehabilitation will be complete August 19.

Message boards are in place to give drivers advance notice of the detour and to direct drivers to the detour route as follows.

The work on Post Road is part of a bridge rehabilitation effort of six bridges in Douglas County where they cross over I-20: Tyson Road over I-20 eastbound, Tyson Road over I-20 westbound, Post Road over I-20, Liberty Road over I-20, Burnt Hickory Road over I-20, and North County Line Road over I-20.

Rehabilitation includes raising the structures’ vertical clearance, bridge deck preservation (with polymer overlay), painting of steel beams, joint replacement where necessary and stabilizing the superstructures and substructures. Construction on each bridge will require 30-45 day detours for each bridge to ensure safety for workers and drivers.

Motorists are cautioned to reduce their speed while traveling through work zones, pay attention and watch for workers. Before heading out, get real-time information on work status and traffic conditions. Call 511, visit 511ga.org, or download the Georgia 511 app.
