The Double Scoop’s ownership in Franklin, Georgia, has changed again; but that’s not all. The new owners have added an additional enterprise to the business–Heard County Outfitters, which offers Chattahoochee river tours and kayak equipment rentals. Kevin Terry and Sue Johnson became The Double Scoop’s official owners on April 1. They describe their journey to ownership, “First we were customers of The Double Scoop with our kids, and we always enjoyed coming to get some good ice cream…and now it has been a blessing to have the shop to give something back to the community.”
Sue was retiring, and the opportunity to own The Double Scoop popped up. The couple realized that they had a chance to get more involved with the Heard County community, schools, and libraries which was something that they had always wanted to do.
The Double Scoop has 28 flavors of Blue Bell Ice Cream, and various flavors of frozen lemonade, ranging from strawberry to blue raspberry, smoothies, pastries and yogurt parfait. Another reason to stop in is to get their coffee and espresso, the beans for which are roasted fresh right in Georgia. The new owners aim to keep the quality just as good as before. Kevin says, “We do everything that the big chain coffee shops do, and everybody says it’s better than Starbucks.” A new drink from the new owners is the Sue Special. The drink is a “white chocolate caramel latte, and that’s what everyone in town comes to ask for.”
As for The Heard County Outfitters, the store had been on their mind for a couple of years. They enjoyed being on the river, and they wanted to start a business that would allow the community to enjoy the river as much as they do. This year the couple acquired some equipment, “and so we decided to move forward with Heard County Outfitters,” Kevin said. “We hoped that we could put people on the river to enjoy it.”
The rentals are done at The Double Scoop. Heard County Outfitters runs “shuttles and rentals for people anywhere in Heard County and all the way down to West Point Lake, with pick up and drop off,” Kevin mentions. The length of the trips can range from two to 10 hours, led by the owner and his son. “We’ve got something for everybody. We’ve got it all, with their equipment or ours.”
With these two businesses [the owners] are hoping to put their beautiful town on the map.
“We really feel blessed to be part of an amazing community. People here are so humble and friendly, and we just have no other words than to say ‘thank you’ for their loyalty. The chance to serve them and their families makes our hearts filled with gratitude,” said Sue.
