For the second consecutive year, the Carrollton High School Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) team qualified for and competed in the MATE ROV World Championships, capping off another successful season by testing its engineering skills against some of the world’s top underwater robotics programs.
Hosted by Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, the international competition brought together 86 teams to test their engineering, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through a series of technical challenges. In addition to underwater mission runs, teams were evaluated on a safety inspection, a marketing display, an engineering presentation, technical documentation, and a job safety analysis.
Throughout the week, the team overcame technical challenges by engineering creative solutions under pressure. Their work resulted in the program’s highest overall competition score in the past three years. The Trojans were represented by graduated seniors Omar DeJesus, Jake Preston, and Elicia Salgado; rising seniors Aaron Ashlock, Joel Nunez Gusman, and Mason Scoville; and rising junior Christian Long.

Beyond the competition, students gained valuable experience by collaborating with peers from around the world, networking with industry professionals, and exploring careers in marine technology and engineering. The opportunity to compete on the world stage and travel to a new country was made possible largely through the Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation.
“I’m incredibly proud of how our students represented CHS,” said ROV Club sponsor Christina Long. “They overcame challenges, worked together, and competed with some of the best teams in the world. We’re especially grateful to the Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation, EMGS, the Yamaha Corporation, the Marine Technological Society, and World’s Finest Chocolate for making this unforgettable opportunity possible.”
