Bremen Board Recognizes Student Achievement, Approves ESPLOST Purchases

The Bremen Board of Education opened this month’s regular meeting by recognizing student-athlete Marley Derringer, who graduated in May as a four-time GHSA state high jump champion. The Board thanked Derringer for her dedication and accomplishments and presented her with a certificate of recognition.

Mr. Keith Redding, representing the Sewell Mill Foundation’s Compassion for Action Board, presented Bremen City Schools with a check for more than $23,000. The funds were raised during the foundation’s annual Gala for Good, a Kentucky Derby-themed event focused on supporting children experiencing poverty and homelessness. In appreciation, the Board presented Redding with a small cooler filled with Bremen gear.

The Board also approved six new policies for public review in response to new state laws and recommendations from the Georgia School Boards Association. The policies are available on the Board’s website for public viewing and feedback, with final approval expected next month.

Board members approved the use of up to $240,000 in ESPLOST funds to purchase new band equipment for both the high school and lower-level schools. They also approved up to $75,000 in ESPLOST funds for the construction of a metal building at the track, which will provide secure storage and shaded space for track athletes during practices and meets.

Several consent agenda items were unanimously approved, including service contracts, fundraising requests, a facilities request, and memorandums of understanding with Cornerstone Autism Solutions LLC and the West Georgia Regional Library System.

The meeting concluded with unanimous approval of all personnel actions on the agenda. These included extended work hours for two employees, five resignations, one transfer, and the hiring of 13 new faculty and staff members, including an administrative assistant, two substitute teachers, seven paraprofessionals, a substitute bus driver, and two community coaches.

As the new school year approaches, Bremen City Schools continues preparing through staffing, budgeting, training, and facility improvements.
