Carrollton, GA – Carrollton City Schools announced today the results of their “Gold and Black Give Back” Homecoming program. In its sixth year, the program turns Homecoming at Carrollton High School into a community outreach program and engages each of the schools in Carrollton City Schools to participate.
Collecting toiletries for local shelters and food banks, the effort has raised thousands of needed items over the past six autumns. Community partners include: The Community Foundation of West Georgia, Open Hands, Manna House and St. Margaret’s Community Outreach.
Dr. Kent Edwards, Superintendent of Carrollton City Schools, said, “This is an example of what we mean when we say we are educating the whole child. Having our younger learners partner with our high school students to make our community better is simply awesome to watch. We are extremely proud to be part of such a wonderful community and look forward to continuing our contributions for the next generations.”
Over 19,000 items, (bars of soap, shampoo and conditioner, toilet tissue, toothbrushes and toothpaste) were collected during this year’s Homecoming week. This year’s Senior Class, partnering with the kindergarten, first and second grades, earned the top spot after collecting 8,078 rolls of toilet tissue.
“Our community partners have told us these are some of the most needed items, but often the things they struggle to make available,” said Dr. Mark Albertus, Principal at Carrollton High School. “It’s a challenge we thought we could help with and these last six Homecomings have been among our best ever. This is an effort from our students and parents, teachers, administrators and everyone who cheers on the Trojans. I, personally, could not be more proud,” Albertus concluded.
