A lot of exciting developments are happening in East Alabama. Here’s a summary of what we’ve found:
The biggest development is the demolition of part of Quintard Mall. The initial front part facing Highway 21 including the former Sears has been torn down, leaving JCPenney essentially as a stand-alone store on that end of the mall. The demolished part may be rebuilt, but that is yet to be confirmed.
Just down the road from the mall, more demolition is underway as the former Shoney’s and American Inn & Suites next to the I-20 and Highway 21 interchange is also being torn down. No word at this time what may become of the property.
Back on the east side of town, the Zaxby’s at the corner of Jimmy Hinton Drive and Colonial Drive just off Leon Smith Parkway has reopened after an extensive renovation.
Across the interstate bridge from that, a lot of happenings have been taking place. Towneplace Suites by Marriott is being constructed next to the Five Below/Ulta Beauty phase of Oxford Commons. Across from that at Oxford Exchange, the former Gridiron Restaurant is undergoing renovations to become a Jim & Nick’s, Buffalo Wild Wings has now opened, Mattress Firm is expected to come to the former Kirkland’s, and Bath and Body Works has opened near America’s Best, although it’s not clear if this location will replace the one at Quintard Mall.
Finally, two new RV dealerships are in the works for east Alabama. One is expected to be constructed next to Sam’s Club in Oxford, and another, Great American RV SuperStore, is currently being built at exit 205 in Heflin behind the 76/Circle K. Great American has other locations throughout Alabama.
