The City of LaGrange is honoring LaGrange Police Department Corporal Michael Barton for his dedicated 25 years of service. Corporal Barton was hired by LPD in December 1998. Before he was hired, he served in the United States Army stationed at Fort Benning and was assigned to the Seventy-Fifth Ranger Regiment. He was then transferred to the Second Twenty-Ninth Infantry Training Brigade where he trained and instructed soldiers in their Military Occupational Skill (MOS) to be mortar men. Barton also completed Jump School, Combat Lifesaver School, Sniper School, and Instructor School.
As a part of the LaGrange Police Department, Barton completed the POST Academy and Field Training Program. In 2000, he was selected to be a Canine Handler. In 2001 Barton became a member of the Department’s Emergency Services Unit and was assigned as the Team’s Sniper. In 2002, Barton became a member of the LPD Bike Patrol Unit and then in 2006, he attended and graduated from the Field Training Officer Course at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center, at which time he was appointed to the rank of Corporal. Corporal Barton then began training recruit officers while remaining a member of the Bike Team, a member of the Emergency Service Unit, and a night shift Canine Handler. In May 2012, Corporal Barton was nominated and won Officer of the Year by the Optimist Club of LaGrange. In 2019, Barton accepted the position of School Resource Officer at HOPE Academy.
