West Georgia Technical College (WGTC) is excited to announce the upcoming renovation of its East Campus, located at 220 Fort Drive, to establish the Electrification and Transportation Center. This strategic initiative aims to address the growing demand for a skilled workforce in the electrification, logistics, transportation, and manufacturing sectors.
The East Campus, home of the original Troup Tech, consists of two small, 50-year-old facilities that are inadequate for supporting high-tech programming demands. In response to industry needs and new developments in the area, WGTC has been advocating for a state-funded capital outlay project to enhance campus facilities and programming. Recently, the college was awarded $6.5 million in state funding through the Workforce Accelerator for Manufacturing (WAM) initiative. This funding will be used for renovations and equipment to support training in the electric vehicle (EV) industry, including manufacturing and aftermarket maintenance.
The renovated Electrification and Transportation Center will encompass 32,000 square feet, divided into three wings with state-of-the-art facilities, including outdoor spaces for CDL and lineworker training. It will also house programs such as Automotive Technology, EV Technology and Repair, Logistics, Electrical, and EV Manufacturing. Additionally, it will offer dealership support programs in areas like marketing, finance, and parts specialization to meet the industry’s evolving needs. These comprehensive offerings will equip students with the skills needed for a wide range of careers in the transportation and electrification sectors, supporting the success of these vital industries.
“The chance to revitalize the east campus and its original facilities with high-demand career training programs is truly an honor,” said WGTC President Dr. Julie Post. “We are deeply grateful for Governor Kemp’s confidence in us and for the state funding to bring this transformative project to life.”
The renovation will enable the relocation and expansion of the Automotive Repair Technology program from the LaGrange West Campus, while the vacated space will accommodate the growth of the Machine Tool Technology program, boosting WGTC’s capacity in these vital fields.
Phase I of the renovation project began in January with a contractor kick off meeting. Demolition of Building B will follow, marking the transformation of this longstanding facility into a modern hub for education and workforce development. These updates will not only rejuvenate the original technical college facility but also provide essential infrastructure upgrades to support high-demand career fields necessary for workforce training in the region.
