First-Grader’s Award-Winning Story Steals the Show at Bremen Board Meeting

The Bremen City Schools Board of Education celebrated student achievement and reviewed end-of-year updates during its June meeting Monday night.

The highlight of the evening was the recognition of first-grade student Prescott Ann Guyton, who was named the Georgia Young Authors state champion at the first-grade level. After winning both the school and regional competitions, Prescott earned the top honor in the state competition.

As part of the recognition, Prescott read her award-winning story to board members and attendees. The story followed a young girl’s adventure with a talking penguin named Sparkle and focused on lessons about friendship and learning from those who are different from us. Board members praised Prescott for both her writing and her confident reading before presenting her with a plaque commemorating her accomplishment.

Following the recognition, district administrators shared updates as the school year officially came to a close.

Assistant Superintendent Dr. Tim Huff reported that end-of-year testing was completed smoothly across the district, crediting school administrators and the technology department for helping ensure the process ran without significant issues. He also highlighted recent leadership training efforts and noted that Teacher of the Year applications will be reviewed later this month.

Administrators also reported on collaborative work with Haralson County Schools to develop updated student attendance protocols required under recent state legislation. The new procedures are expected to come before the board as a policy update in July.

District leaders highlighted growing participation in educational field trips, which have become a major focus in recent years. Participation among students in grades three through eight increased significantly during the past school year, a trend administrators attributed to support from the board, local organizations, and community partners. Officials said the district remains committed to providing students with opportunities to learn beyond the classroom through travel and hands-on experiences.

Athletic Director and Director of Programs and Activities Bill Garrett also recognized student-athlete Marley Derringer, who recently captured her fourth state championship in the high jump. Garrett said Bremen enjoyed a strong spring sports season overall and noted that student-athletes are already preparing for the upcoming fall season.

Technology Director Brian Wheeler reported that summer technology upgrades are underway. Existing classroom devices have been removed, and the district is preparing to install new computers and equipment before students return for the new school year.

The board also approved several items on its consent agenda, including minutes from previous meetings, updates to the district’s bullying policy, planned improvements to the softball complex, and traffic flow enhancements near Bremen High School.

In personnel actions, board members approved several resignations, staff transfers, new hires, coaching appointments, and other staffing changes as the district continues preparations for the 2026-27 school year.

The meeting concluded with district leaders noting that summer work is already underway across Bremen City Schools as staff prepare to welcome students back in just a few short weeks.
