Drivers in the Atlanta metro area should prepare for nighttime lane closures as the Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) moves forward with the I-285/I-20 West Interchange project. Beginning Monday, February 3, and continuing through Friday, February 7, construction crews will install advanced warning signs and conduct preliminary work to improve traffic flow and safety in the area.
Project Overview
The I-285/I-20 West Interchange project aims to enhance traffic movement by reconstructing and widening key system-to-system ramps. It will also add new collector-distributor lanes, or connecting lanes, as well as auxiliary lanes along I-20 west and I-285 north of the interchange. These upgrades are expected to reduce congestion and improve overall traffic efficiency.
Lane Closures and Affected Areas
Weather permitting, the following lane closures will take place nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.:
I-20 Eastbound:
- Rolling, single left-lane closures from Lee Street (mile marker 42.5) to Joseph E. Lowery Boulevard (mile marker 54.4).
- Alternating double right- and left-lane closures from Six Flags Parkway (mile marker 47.3) to Fulton Industrial Boulevard (mile marker 48.8).
I-20 Westbound:
- Rolling, single left-lane closures from McDaniel Street (mile marker 56.2) to Thornton Road (mile marker 44.3).
- Alternating single right-lane closures and double left-lane closures from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (mile marker 49.6) to Fulton Industrial Boulevard (mile marker 48.6).
